OurHealth Richmond magazine’s series “How-to in Healthcare” is a step-by-step guide to pursuing a career in healthcare.  

Part I of OurHealth magazine’s four-part series — "How to in Healthcare: A Step-by-Step Guide to Pursuing a Career in Medicine" — examined how students can begin preparing for a healthcare career as early as high school. It appeared in the April/May 2016 issue of OurHealth magazine’s Richmond edition and focused on building a foundation for success and making high school curriculum count.  

In 2016, our New Kitchen, New Nutrition, New You series puts the focus on helping you get healthier in the kitchen — one ingredient at a time. Each edition of OurHealth will highlight small changes you can make in your food prep and shopping habits that can add up to a major positive impact on your nutrition and health.

Your health is as unique as you are. It’s shaped by a combination of many factors — age, weight, gender, genetics, environment and lifestyle choices. In your first visit with your primary care provider, the doctor assesses each of these components and develops a care plan specific to you. Then it’s your turn. You have to act on that plan. You have to “do your care.”

Know Your Care - Understanding your health and how to maintain it. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. This age-old proverb certainly carries its share of credibility. It’s spawned several studies by researchers about the health benefits of apples. People around the world live by it by keeping their crispers crammed with the tasty treat. No doubt about it, loyalty to the apple is long lived because this proverb professes how good it is for us.
